I hadn’t heard of Albert Irvin before, and I don’t know why! His work has a crushing immediacy to them, the marks he makes have real weight to them, which I want to look at and read about.
In this Tate video, he says that abstract painting has an ‘immediacy’ and direct-ness to it. He says he realised at one stage that he could make paintings about the human condition without having to ‘put bits of humans’ in them. I love this simplistic statement.
Marks that are ‘autographic’, that denote where he was at 4.30pm on Thursday the xxth of x.
I want to do more reading about him.
