Responding the environment
Resolving the painting into a painting – how does that work?
Setting the concrete for the world at the start of the painting – determining the space. After that, it is putting forms in the world. Establishing structure, shapes, density, gravity, filling the distance and determining how much of the space is going to be filled. Details, things that continue through the space.
I had never thought about about painting in this way, but that is what it is: establishing a space within the canvas, and filling it. Not just with physical forms, but with atmosphere – light, gravity (or no gravity?), direction relational to something off the canvas? etc.
Resolving the painting comes after it’s spacial boundaries have been established, after the foundation and large structures have been established in the painting. Then it is dealing with details, emotions, etc.
