I painted this kind of theatre set – the two trees, the bush, the sky, the red blob of inside the kitchen. It’s a scene I did from memory in Devon in Spring earlier this year:

Then I put so many layers of glaze over the whole thing. Pushing back these shapes, some parts more than others. Attempting to add the sense of light streaming in the two yellow/orange strips:

Now I am adding shapes in oil on top. Thicker brushy shapes marking moments with dimension. It’s as if I am adding actors to the stage I have built. Adding the drama, the action, because these liney shapes seem to be conveying movement:

I wonder if actually watching theatre would help me understand this idea of landscape painting as a stage… I am actually going to a show tomorrow night, so I will bring my sketchbook and consider this!
