After my previous two experiments I have become interested in texture, control of the medium and layering different techniques to create the impression of a landscape. Below are some paintings from the RA Summer Show 2017 that I visited last year that demonstrate this idea well. Both of these paintings play with this idea of…… Continue reading Texture, control, layering & Artist Mal Levittoux

Out of sketchbook experiment #2
For this second experiment I picked this photograph, similar to the scenes I have been using in the past. For the moment I want to keep the scenes I’m drawing similar, so I can compare technique easily. The contrast in light, and the amount of texture, line and pattern made it a challenge to draw,…… Continue reading Out of sketchbook experiment #2
Out of sketchbook experiment #1
This is the first experiment I have done outside of my sketchbook. I used graphite pencils 2B-6B and a putty rubber to add highlights. I said before doing this experiment that I wanted to experiment with colour, but once again I was drawn to light and dark, and breaking form down to a more simple…… Continue reading Out of sketchbook experiment #1
Artist Piet Mondrian
Lived 1872-1944. Completing B&W experiments of light coming through trees has illuminated the shapes and patterns that can be captured in these scenes. I was first interested in Mondrian’s work because of the contrast between his paintings of nature and his grid-like abstract paintings. I want to explore how these styles are linked. < One…… Continue reading Artist Piet Mondrian
Impressionism and ‘Painting The Modern Garden’
This passage from the book ‘Monet to Matisse – Painting the Modern Garden’ captures why I was drawn to the subject of natural light in landscape, particularly the idea of capturing ‘fleetingness’. I have selected some impressionist paintings from the book that link and inspire my project. Looking at all the pieces I picked together,…… Continue reading Impressionism and ‘Painting The Modern Garden’
Collecting Reference Photos #1
I have been collecting images of outdoor scenes that have atmospheric colour and light. I was drawn to scenes where the light created patterns on water and through trees. I am going to do some sketchbook experiments with this material and see where it takes me, using a variety of mediums.
The Forest at Fontainebleau by Matisse
I saw this piece whilst visiting the National Gallery in London and thought it was relevant to this project. Below is my initial response that I wrote down standing in front of the painting. Vibrant colours create magical atmosphere Thick brushstrokes have very painterly quality Texture light movement energy emotion A painters perception of the…… Continue reading The Forest at Fontainebleau by Matisse
Starting with a Visual Mindmap
What do all these images have in common? Experimenting with the painters perception and how they can interpret and recreate the world around them on canvas (-that idea of recreating memories reminds me of Hodgkins portrait work with pure colour and shape… look at him maybe?). Lots of ‘golden hour’ shots – when the sun…… Continue reading Starting with a Visual Mindmap
