funny rock thoughts

I have realised that both landscapes I am interested in at the moment – scilly isles and west Penrith in Cornwall, are on granite rock.

Is this coincidence or am I drawn to this landscape?

Both landscapes, because of the granite rock, have this incredible black undertone to it. Cold, steely undertones. Very intense. It feels prehistoric.

What would it be like to paint with this rock? Probably very expensive!

The rocks in my work tread on this comedic line, I think they do. Lumpy colourful shapes with shadows. So cute! So funny. Rocks as markers, rocks as significant meaning in the landscape. Like on my run this morning I ran past a big rock along the river that was placed there to mark the line between Kingston Borough and Richmond Borough. Another example is the rock along the Tinners Way in Cornwall that had a deep cross grooved into it which marked the point at which four areas of named land, parishes? meet.

What do the rocks mark in my paintings? I quite like that they mark nothing, nowhere. That’s what’s funny about the four corner rocks, they mark the four corners of the painting, and nothing more. HAHA. That’s funny. I wonder if anyone else think’s they’re funny. Perhaps that doesn’t matter.

There’s a big difference between the paintings that have rocks in a stone circle shape than the rocks placed where I want them to be.

How could I play with this more? Placing a rock in a silly location. What about one big one in the middle of the st Agnes shaped island.

What about rocks spelling out a work?

Nowhere to go

I don’t get it

Funny

Rocks in funny places. Rocks in Cornish places next to rocks in silly places.

A painting of a Cornish rock shape surrounded by silly rock shapes.

What about painting the back of these constructed rock landscapes. Ie. Paint the three rocks with the hole in the middle from the back, where you can see the little bit that props them up. I could photograph it turned around, but I don’t think I have them anymore! / Not here. I’d have to make new ones.

I did a sketch of the rocks in Cornwall surrounded by the silly rocks and it’s quite funny. I think it would be a good painting. Is it insulting? Am I making fun of the rocks in Cornwall?

Rocks to mark the edges of the painting. That would be funny. A rock to mark the middle of the painting. What about that rock with the four sections in it to mark the middle of the painting. Quite funny. God I want to paint all of this because it’s silly and funny. I’ve never made such silly work before. I fear it’s more of a comic than a painting… nah ignore that fear!
