Two paintings side by side, one with a circle in the top half, one without. The dot changes the painting completely.
The first, a flat shape cut out, Matisse. The second a great big expanse.
The sun liberates the blank flat space and gives it pictorial depth.
How mad, that a painting can change so dramatically with the difference of a small coloured circle.
What happens when you turn the composition upside down, and the dot is at the bottom of the paper. Confusion!
My brain can’t work out what’s going on. It looks very frustrating when it is upside down.
All I see now in my paintings are suns!
