‘The silence of nature itself, in which the random noises of culture were swallowed up – was one of the dominant facts of medieval life, outside the cloister as well as inside it.’ P.324‘…might well have exceeded anything we take for “normal” cultural experience today. Now we see the same cathedral through a vast filter…… Continue reading Hughs R. (1991). The Shock Of The New, Edition 2?, London: Thames and Hudson Ltd

‘Periods of antagonism between man and the world have been the rule, and those of unity the exception – which is why the history of art has known very few periods of classicism, but an enormous number of anti-classicist movements.’P.85
Finished painting!
This is the first large glazed painting I have finished! I am happy with the results and I think it shows potential for the future. From start to finish: Next time I do one of these paintings I want to record each layer of glazing, which didn’t always happen here, and perhaps use a tripod…… Continue reading Finished painting!
Unfinished painting so far
This is what the painting looks like so far. I had more time in this project I would keep glazing. And after this deadline I will keep continuing with it! You can see I have just started to add the column of light to the painting. I tried adding multiple layers before the glaze had…… Continue reading Unfinished painting so far
Mini doc with David Salle
I have watched this mini documentary on David Salle’s painting so many times since I first watched it over a year ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc5ufcPDXkI Salle raises ideas about the surface of the painting vs. the illusion of depth that have really stuck with me. The idea of the painting being a surface, that your eyes roam…… Continue reading Mini doc with David Salle
Book: Landscape and Memory by Simon Schama
Introduction For although we are accustomed to separate nature and human perception into two realms, they are, in fact, indivisible. Before it can ever be a repose for the senses, landscape is the work of the mind. Its scenery is built up as much from strata of memory as from layers of rock. Pp.6-7 Ansel…… Continue reading Book: Landscape and Memory by Simon Schama
Sources of light in an older painting
Looking back at this painting I did about a year ago, I notice now that the brushstrokes have a gradient of light to dark from the top to the bottom of the painting. That’s one of the reasons I think this painting is (still successful). The circled top centre of the canvas is really bright,…… Continue reading Sources of light in an older painting
Glazing large canvas, so far
The things I have been struggling with so far: – Patience! It takes at least 6 hours to dry between layers, which means a lot of waiting.- Not making the canvas muddy. I haven’t finished with it yet, but at the moment the canvas is very dark and murky. Adding some more vibrant colours on…… Continue reading Glazing large canvas, so far
Painting en plein air today – acrylics!
Since the small acrylic glaze test went well; the colours were radient, the texture of the acrylic paint was fine, I am doing a big painting in acrylics! This is the first time I have ever done a big painting in acrylics, so I didn’t know what to expect. The pros I knew going into this…… Continue reading Painting en plein air today – acrylics!
Essay: American Scenery–Thomas Cole vs NASA
I was reading this essay for my dissertation, but there were some interesting points made that directly link to my practice. Squinting at this picture, we see a technological revolution, using a satellite to climb above the mountain, computers to capture the image, and pixels, not paint, to portray the scene. But we also see a…… Continue reading Essay: American Scenery–Thomas Cole vs NASA
